Watering Smarter in Columbia, SC
Columbia gets a fair amount of rain over a year, but it rarely arrives when lawns need it most. Summer brings stretches of high heat with no rain, followed by sudden downpours. An irrigation system should fill the gaps without running on schedule during a thunderstorm. As a general guideline, established warm-season lawns need about an inch of water a week, counting rainfall, during the growing season. It works best applied deeply and infrequently, in the early morning, so the grass dries before evening and disease has less chance to take hold.
Soil type changes how that inch should be delivered. Sandy soils in the Sandhills and Northeast Columbia absorb water quickly but do not hold it long, so they need efficient coverage and sensible run times. Clay soils in Lexington, Irmo and Chapin absorb water slowly. Run a zone too long and water sheets off onto the driveway. For clay we program cycle-and-soak schedules, splitting each zone’s run into shorter passes so the water soaks in.
Winterizing your sprinkler system
Our winters are mild, but hard freezes do happen, and exposed backflow preventers and above-ground pipe are what usually break. Before the first hard freeze, shut off the water supply to the irrigation system and drain what can be drained. Insulate or cover the backflow assembly and exposed piping, and switch the controller to off or rain mode. In spring we turn systems back on, check every head and zone, and reset the schedule for the season.
Upgrades that pay for themselves
Smart controllers that adjust to local weather, rain sensors that cancel watering after a storm, and drip lines in shrub beds all cut wasted water. Matching each zone to sun exposure and plant type keeps both your lawn and your landscape beds healthier. New patios or walkways from our hardscaping team can include sleeves so irrigation reaches every part of the yard.
Irrigation FAQs
How often should I water my lawn in the Columbia area?
Most established warm-season lawns do well with about an inch of water per week, including rain, applied in one or two deep early-morning waterings rather than a little every day. Sandy soils may need slightly more frequent cycles; clay soils need shorter cycles with soak time in between to prevent runoff.
When should I winterize my sprinkler system?
Before the first hard freeze, which typically arrives in late fall in the Midlands. Shut off the irrigation water supply, drain what you can, insulate or cover the backflow preventer and exposed pipes, and turn the controller off or to rain mode.
Does my irrigation system need a rain sensor?
A rain or weather sensor is one of the cheapest ways to save water. It stops the system from running during or right after a storm. Smart controllers go further by adjusting run times based on local weather.
